I’ll be honest - I started my business because it seemed like an exciting thing to do at the time. I love a challenge, love problem solving and am relatively unfazed by the lack of certainty and security - something that has meant a lot of patience from my wife...so off we went. The first few years was learning the landscape - How do I price products? How do I manage cash flow consistency? Who do I hire and at what stage? How do I promote what we do? Eventually, we found a steady-enough rhythm.
7 years later, our journey is still unfolding, but I’ve been fortunate to learn a number of important lessons along the way. There’s one that stands out more than the others. I wish I could tell you about a great moment of revelation, but it’s been learned the same way most learning happens - gradually over a long period of time.
It’s this: I’m in business because I have a solution to a problem my customers are facing.
For years I thought I was in business because of what I wanted to achieve. I wanted to make incredible films, I wanted to work on my own terms, I wanted to build a team of passionate creatives who worked with excellence, I wanted to build a client base across SE QLD. While those ambitions may still be true - the reality is my clients didn’t (and don’t) primarily care about what I want to achieve - they care about how I can help them solve their problem. That’s what has led us to where we are today.
3 years ago we realised our clients needed more support with their marketing execution. They were coming to us for media - Brandfilms was a videography company after all - but would feel stuck with the overall direction of their marketing. Their marketing was bits and pieces and they couldn’t see how it contributed to their bottom line.
We had to do something.
We quickly started running advertising campaigns. We’d create the media, then manage an ad campaign to ensure their ideal customer saw it. As this developed, we saw further gaps in their marketing - someone saw one of our ads, then visited the website but would then close the browser and carry on with their day. We couldn’t just let the prospect fall out of the funnel - we needed to solve this problem for our clients - so how about a resource for them to engage with on the website?
And so it continued.
I came to the point where I realised that I’m in business (and people engage with this business) because I have a solution to a problem they’re facing. They want their marketing to contribute to their bottom line, they want a clear plan for growth, they want to be able to justify their marketing expense.
That's why The Brand Shop exists. We create and execute marketing management for ambitious brands.
